The UF Online Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management provides students with a well-rounded curriculum preparing them to move into any aspect of service industry management. This major requires a specialization in either Event Management or Tourism and Hospitality Management to give students a deeper understanding in these fields.

The tourism industry has a continued need to recruit highly qualified employees to manage teams and create excellent experiences. With 1 billion people traveling annually, tourism is the largest and fastest growing industry in the world. This comprehensive degree prepares students to join a field that ranks among the top three largest employers in 29 U.S. states.

With an increased demand for professionals in this industry each year, graduates can become leaders, decision-makers, and entrepreneurs in both public and private sectors. This major prepares students with the technical, interpersonal and professional skills that employers are looking for in a competitive candidate.

A degree in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management requires core professional courses such as those in management and supervision, research methods, and more. This major covers various career fields, including management of hotels, theme parks, cruise lines, restaurants, and convention centers, as well as tour operations and other services within the vast industry. The Tourism and Hospitality Management specialization goes further into depth on topics such as lodging operations, tourism planning, and tourism and hospitality marketing, while the Event Management specialization focuses on event promotion, convention sales and services, and strategic planning.

  • Event Management: Gain the knowledge and skills necessary to administer and manage commercial and entrepreneurial event service. This program includes courses in conference and special event planning, promotion, sponsorship, financial and revenue management, and production.
  • Tourism and Hospitality Management: Gain the knowledge and skills necessary to administer and manage destination management organizations, tour operations, public recreation, and hospitality enterprises such as hotels, resorts, attractions, and cruises. This program includes courses in tourism and hospitality marketing, strategic planning and development, lodging operations, and revenue management.

Competitive upper division applicants (students with 60 or more college credits earned) should have at least a 2.0 overall GPA and completed the following courses with at least a 2.0 GPA:

  • Introductory Sociology (SYG 2000)
  • General Psychology (PSY 2012)
  • Macroeconomics (ECO 2013) OR Microeconomics (ECO 2023)
  • Developmental Psychology (DEP 2004)
  • Public Speaking (SPC 2608)


  • Upper-division applicants with 60 or more transferrable college credits may be considered for conditional admission if they have completed 3 out of 5 prerequisites including Macroeconomics (ECO 2013) or Microeconomics (ECO 2023).
