The Bachelor of Science in Journalism: Sports & Media is housed within UF’s College of Journalism and Communications, which consistently ranks among the top journalism programs in the country.

This customizable degree prepares students to work in diverse settings, including traditional and new media platforms. As a cross-disciplinary program, students study both journalism and a specialized sports core curriculum. Courses teach proficiency in key areas including writing for communicators, reporting skills, data literacy, and more. Beyond these foundational skills, multiple opportunities are available to gain practical and immersive experience in media properties, both inside and outside of the College of Journalism and Communications.

A degree in Journalism: Sports & Media also provides students with strong critical thinking skills, multimedia storytelling techniques, and professional skills. Courses such as Multimedia Sports Reporting, Sports Communication, and Sports Media Law, among others provide important insight into a variety of positions within the industry. What are the admissions requirements for this major?

Freshmen & Lower Division Transfer Applicants

Upper Division & Second Bachelor's Transfer Applicants

Upper division transfer applicants (students with 60 or more college credits earned) and Second Bachelor's degree seeking applicants should have at least a 2.0 overall GPA and completed the following 5 prerequisite courses with at least a 2.0 GPA. To be competitive for admission, applicants should have a minimum 2.5 or higher overall GPA.

  • Argument and Persuasion (ENC 1102)
  • American History since 1877 (AMH 2020)
  • American Federal Government (POS 2041)
  • Introduction to Statistics (STA 2023)
  • Principles of Macroeconomics (ECO 2013)
  •   Note: Principles of Microeconomics (ECO 2023) may be substituted for ECO 2013.

  • All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.
  • Unsuccessful attempts in prerequisite courses may lower competitiveness.
  • Unsuccessful attempts in additional courses in the desired major may lower competitiveness.
  • Out of state courses used to meet prerequisites may need to be evaluated by the appropriate department upon admission.

Additional Admissions Pathways

UF Online Ready

This major participates in the UF Online Ready program, which allows a limited number of qualified applicants to complete specific missing prerequisites here in UF Online as degree-seeking students before enrolling in other UF Online courses. Admission is offered on a space-available basis (fall and spring semesters only).

A student may be selected for UF Online Ready if they have:

  • 3.0 overall GPA
  • 3 of the 5 prerequisites complete, two of which must be:
    • Principles of Macroeconomics (ECO 2013)
    •   Note: Principles of Microeconomics (ECO 2023) may be substituted for ECO 2013.

    • Intro to Statistics 1 (STA2023)
  • Admitted UF Online Ready students may only enroll in and must successfully complete all remaining required prerequisites in their first semester.
    • Argument and Persuasion (ENC 1102)
