The Bachelor of Science in Advertising: Persuasive Messaging is housed within the Department of Advertising at the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications (CJC), one of the top colleges in the country for this field of study. By balancing conceptual frameworks with professional skills, students graduate with the knowledge and experience today’s employers seek.

This degree features robust curriculum in areas such as strategy, branding, research, and analytics. It will also prepare students to work in a culturally diverse and technologically shifting marketplace. Students even gain hands-on experience by taking experiential study abroad learning courses with the CJC.

The Advertising: Persuasive Messaging program will provide students with the professional skills, problem-solving abilities, and persuasion techniques needed to succeed in a variety of positions within the growing advertising industry. An emphasis on teaching students how to engage with audiences and tell brand stories have broad relevancy within audience-centered fields such as education, health, sales, and law. Required courses include Advertising Strategy, Consumer and Audience Analytics, Digital Insights, Writing Fundamentals for Mass Communicators, and more. With these courses and a variety of electives, students can customize their own plan of study to fit the needs of their specific area of interest.

What are the admissions requirements for this major?

Freshmen & Lower Division Transfer Applicants

Upper Division & Second Bachelor's Transfer Applicants

Upper division transfer applicants (students with 60 or more college credits earned) and Second Bachelor's degree seeking applicants should have at least a 2.5 overall GPA and completed the following 5 prerequisite courses with at least a 2.5 GPA:

  • Argument and Persuasion (ENC 1102)
  • American History since 1877 (AMH 2020)
  • American Federal Government (POS 2041) OR General Psychology (PSY 2012)
  • Introduction to Statistics (STA 2023)
  • Principles of Macroeconomics (ECO 2013)
  •   Note: Principles of Microeconomics (ECO 2023) may be substituted for ECO 2013.


  • All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.
  • Unsuccessful attempts in prerequisite courses may lower competitiveness.
  • Unsuccessful attempts in additional courses in the desired major may lower competitiveness.
  • Out of state courses used to meet prerequisites may need to be evaluated by the appropriate department upon admission.

Conditional Admission

    Applicants may be conditionally admitted if they meet all of the following criteria:

  • Have completed 3 out of the 5 prerequisite courses, two of which must be Argument and Persuasion (ENC 1102) and Principles of Macroeconomics (ECO 2013).
  •   Note: Principles of Microeconomics (ECO 2023) may be substituted for ECO 2013.

  • Have at least a 3.0 overall GPA
UF Online Ready

    This major participates in the UF Online Ready program, which allows a limited number of qualified applicants to complete specific missing prerequisites here in UF Online as degree-seeking students before enrolling in other UF Online courses. Admission is offered on a space-available basis.

    A student may be selected for UF Online Ready if they have:

  • 3 of the 5 prerequisites complete, including Principles of Macroeconomics (ECO 2013)
  •   Note: Principles of Microeconomics (ECO 2023) may be substituted for ECO 2013.

  • 3.0 overall GPA
