Communication and leadership development prepares students for entry into agribusiness and communication positions related to human resource development, corporate training, political interests and agricultural literacy. Agricultural Education and Communication Specializations

Gain a competitive edge with our specialized curriculum that develops skills for diverse agricultural roles. With a focus on disseminating scientific knowledge, agricultural education and communication professionals empower communities to gain a balanced understanding of food systems, natural resources, and related sciences. Agricultural Education and Communication students supplement core technical agriculture courses with teaching, leadership, or media experiences.

This specialization prepares students to teach agriculture in middle schools and high schools. This option provides the basic courses for agricultural teacher certification in Florida and is ideal for students who are passionate about preparing youth for careers in natural resources and agriculture.

Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to enter the Agricultural Education specialization. The Agricultural Education specialization requires a one-week, in-person summer boot camp and a one-semester student teaching internship that must be completed in-person in Florida. This specialization provides the basic courses for agricultural teacher certification in Florida. Graduates can apply to the Florida Department of Education for certification, which requires a passing score on the general knowledge, professional education, and agriculture in 6-12 sections of the Florida Teacher Certification Exam.

Admissions Requirements

Upper division transfer applicants (students with 60 or more college credits earned) and Second Bachelor’s degree seeking applicants should meet the minimum GPA requirements for their desired specialization and required prerequisite courses as follows:

Agricultural Education Specialization
Should have at least a 2.5 overall GPA and completed all the required prerequisite courses below with at least a 2.5 GPA: 

  • Biological Sciences with Lab (BSC 2005 & 2005L) or Principles of Biology with Lab (BSC 2010 & 2010L) 
  • Precalculus Algebra (MAC 1140) or College Algebra (MAC 1105) 
  • Human Growth & Development (EDF 3110) or Developmental Psychology (DEP 2004) 
  • Introduction to Public Speaking (SPC 2608) 
  • Out of state courses used to meet prerequisites may need to be evaluated by the appropriate department upon admission. 

Communications and Leadership Development Specialization
Should have at least a 2.0 overall GPA and completed all the required prerequisite courses below with at least a 2.5 GPA: 

  • Biological Sciences with Lab (BSC 2005 & 2005L) or Principles of Biology with Lab (BSC 2010 & 2010L)
