How to Become an Entomologist: Meaning, Opportunities, and Educational Paths

Entomology and nematology are key to identifying the positive and negative effects of insects, mites, ticks, spiders, nematodes, and other related organisms on the environment. The UF Online Bachelor of Science in Entomology and Nematology degree equips students with a vital understanding of the biology of insects and nematodes, including their behavior, physiology, evolution, and ecological roles. 

Students in the entomology and nematology program can tailor their coursework to focus on specific interest areas with two specialized tracks, biological science of insects and urban pest management. This degree not only prepares students for diverse career opportunities in entomology and nematology but also for jobs within the biological sciences or advanced study in graduate programs within the field.

Graduates of the program become advocates for food security, environmental sustainability, and human and animal health through the study of arthropods and nematodes.


Entomology and Nematology

Designed and delivered by professors from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), UF’s entomology and nematology degree prepares students for a wide array of careers in the public and private sectors. UF Online entomology and nematology students will have coursework focused on ecology, animal behavior, physiology, evolution, systematics, and much more. Students can continue their studies in graduate school or enter the workforce directly upon graduation. UF Online also offers a Minor in Entomology and Nematology for those interested in this program while pursuing other majors.
