Career Showcase: Roadmap for Success

By Alexandra Melendi

The Career Resource Center’s Career Showcase is a crucial event in every Gator’s college career. As you embark on the adventure of pursuing an internship or full-time position, Showcase is an excellent opportunity you don’t want to miss. The road leading to Showcase can seem confusing, but with the Career Resource Center’s tools and some preparation, it doesn’t have to be.

Allie Ricker, Associate Director for Career Education, suggests a great starting point for all students. “What do you want your Career Showcase experience to look like? Then begin working backwards from there,” she said.

If you are traveling to campus for Showcase, think about what you would like to gain from the experience. Do you want to solidify an internship, meet employers, or simply gain exposure to the event itself? Regardless of your reasons for attending, follow these steps to ensure that you get the most out of Career Showcase.

Step 1:
Begin by contacting the Career Resource Center. Schedule an appointment for resume and cover letter development, finding an internship or full-time position, and interview strategies. All of these appointments can be conducted over the phone or via Skype.

Step 2:
Since you have a better idea of where to begin, start navigating through the CRC’s website and see all that they offer. Virtual workshops like the Gator Professional Series will guide you through online modules to equip you with the skills you need to succeed in your job and at Showcase. You can also work through online mock interview modules and virtual career fairs. Read more about these virtual services on CRC’s web page.

Step 3:
Now that you are prepped to seal the deal at Showcase, it is time to start applying. Fill out your online profile located on Gator CareerLink with a headshot, updated resume, a personal statement and much more. Before attending the event, look through a list of employers in CareerLink who will be attending the event and check out their available positions. Apply to ones that peak your interest. Employers will be notified of your application submission and will be able to view your online profile.

Step 4:
Lastly, make sure to follow the CRC blog for articles and updates as Career Showcase approaches. Navigating the long road before and during Showcase doesn’t have to bring up uncertainty and stress. Customizing your journey and preparing yourself will lead to a smooth and enjoyable ride.
