Major Criminology
The criminology major enables students to understand crime, how society reacts to it (especially through the criminal justice system and law), and the interrelationships between features of law and society. It includes learning about the theories of crime and methods for studying crime, law and society. Offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, this degree gives students a broad perspective on the complex relationships among the legal, social, political, historical and psychological influences impacting crime, justice and legal processes.
The UF Online B.A Criminology degree program examines criminal behavior, criminal justice systems and law from a multidisciplinary, liberal-arts perspective. Ultimately, this equates to UF Criminology graduates that are prepared for careers in the criminal or juvenile justice systems (i.e., courts, law enforcement, corrections) and prepares students for further educational ambitions in law school or graduate school.
In addition to completing all university, college and general degree requirements, students enrolled in the Online Criminology program will have the opportunity to pursue the following:
- Four core courses including Advanced Principles of Criminal Justice, Criminological Theory, and Law and Society
- One law-driven requirement such as Law and Legal Process
- Six criminology and law elective courses, which can be tailored to the student’s individual interests and can include courses like Media and Crime, Juvenile Justice, or Introduction to Law Enforcement
